Toss the Toxicity

Natural Wellness

28 May

In 2015, I decided to go off birth control as I wanted to reduce the artificial hormones in my body.

What I predicted would be an easy transition to getting my natural menstruation process again, instead turned into 4 years of doctor’s appointments, blood tests, ultra-sounds, frustration, fear that I wouldn’t be able to get pregnant if we decided we wanted children, and quite frankly, fear that something was wrong with me…

In fall 2018, my skin broke out as I’d never seen it before. I had purple-ish cystic acne all over my chin and cheeks, my digestion was horrible with uncomfortable bloating and gas after eating, and I was embarrassed to go in public and even make eye contact. Although I led what I believed to be a healthy life, I looked and felt unhealthy, and I was ashamed.

In November 2018, my mother helped me set up an appointment with a Naturopath who put me on the path of liver cleansing, acupuncture, calendula and lavender face steams, castor oil packs, and more.
My mother Lorraine also helped me clean up my diet and nutrition (she’s also a licensed Holistic Nutrition Practitioner) by providing me with meal plans and recipes, as well as making me plant-based skincare products designed for my sensitive, acne-prone skin (she’s also the creator of Rain Natural Skincare).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
By April 2019, I had my period again for the first time in 4 years, my skin was clear and bright, my digestion was normal and stopped bothering me, and I felt confident, happy, and truly healthy for the first time in a long time.

I tell you all this because I am a BIG believer in reducing toxins in our lives wherever possible, eating clean and close to nature, reading ingredient lists (food, supplements, skincare, household products, etc.) and being mindful of all the toxins we’re consuming – internally and even externally through thoughts and negativity.

Toss the chemicals, ditch the processed foods, and unfollow the negativity in your feed that’s bringing you down.

When COVID shut down all the horse shows this year When COVID shut down all the horse shows this year, I actually felt myself breathe a sigh of relief. I kept playing this game as though I was going to do the show circuit; picking out shows I was never going to go to, working hard on a goal I didn’t even have, and pretending like I was disappointed when they all got canceled because “damn, this was going to be our year!”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Instead, COVID gave me the opportunity to pretend like I was taking the summer off and just enjoying the warm weather with my horse; trail riding, bareback walks around the property, fun groundwork that worked our minds...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It wasn’t until things started opening up again that I realized that it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do in the first place.

So much has changed since this photo was taken bac So much has changed since this photo was taken back in 2016, but the things that have stayed the same are our adventurous spirits, our love of the outdoors, and our seek for solitude...

I'm not a huge travel junkie - I'm actually more of a homebody who likes routine - but I've been feeling the pull to 'get outta dodge' lately... I can't imagine what all you wanderlusts are going through!

I’ve never really felt like I’ve fit in within I’ve never really felt like I’ve fit in within the horse industry… I’ve never felt good enough, or brave enough, or refined enough, or pulled together enough, and honestly, I’ve never really wanted to try hard enough to achieve any of those things. But they still ate away at me.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m not a competitive person and the idea of spending so much money to just get a ribbon has never appealed to me… that, and the paralyzing idea of having everyone’s eyes on me, criticizing my every move and my horse’s every step.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I just really, really love horses.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I love the way they make me feel; connected, quiet, peaceful. I love the smell and atmosphere of the barn. I love herd dynamics and wearing dirty clothes in public like “so what? I’m a horse girl!”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ve always felt like I needed to “be” something; a jumper rider, or a hunter rider, or a dressage rider, or a gymkhana rider. I thought I always had to have a goal and a vision; a distinct discipline and a plan… I’ve never given myself the permission to just be a rider; a horse lover.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But a lot of that is changing... click on the MARE & MOON blog posts in my bio to read my latest post, titled "Breathing Signs of Relief."
